Architectural Educator Certification (AEC)

Sharing Your Knowledge and Experience with Architects

The SMA AEC program allows members to present educational programs to Architects and provide them with valuable Learning Units (LU) that they need for standing in the AIA and in most states for licensure as a Design Professional.  As a certified SMA presenter you will have the advantage of accepted expertise and value to the architectural community enabling you to present your company's message following conclusion of the AIA approved education program.



General Presenter Qualifications:

  • Employed by a SMA Member Company
  • Industry Experience (varies per course)
  • Code Knowledge (varies per course)
  • Review AEC Training Materials
  • Signed AIA Speaker Agreement
  • Presentation Skills - (varies per course)


SMA AIA Course Information

SMA101 - "Designing Safe, Code-Compliant, Residential Stairways"                 - 1 LU|HSW

Course Description and Objectives

SMA101 Presenter Qualifications: 

A recommendation by your SMA Member company employer based upon:

  • Fulfillment of General Qualifications
  • 5 years experience in the trade
  • SMA Level I & II Code Certification
  • Demonstrated presentation to Mentor and Successful Live Presentation



SMA102 - “Residential Balustrade Design and Specification Utilizing Common Stair Parts” - 1.5 LU/HSW

Course Description and Objectives


SMA102 Presenter Qualifications: 

A recommendation by your SMA Member company employer based upon:

  • Fulfillment of General Qualifications
  • 3 years experience in stair part sales, installation, manufacturing, or combination thereof including no less than 1 year in stair parts sales.
  • Specific Knowledge – Demonstrate knowledge of applicable codes by attaining SMA Level 1 Code Certification.
  • Presentation Skills – Prior presentation experience as evaluated and determined by the SMA Member company.


SMA103 - "Elements of Resilient Stair and Handrail Systems"                           - 2 LU|HSW

Course Description and Objectives


SMA103 Presenter Qualifications: 

A recommendation by your SMA Member company employer based upon:

  • Fulfillment of General Qualifications
  • 5 Years experience in the trade
  • SMA Level I Code Certification
  • Presentation Skills – Prior presentation experience as determined by the SMA Member company.
