This workshop promises to be one of, if not the largest, most well-attended workshop the SMA has organized. Loudoun Stair is a very diverse stair company and centrally located to the largest concentration of our membership. With Airport Shuttle provided by the hotel and Bus transportation from the hotel to the shop included this will be economical to attend as well. The SMA Education committee is currently reviewing possible venues for the first class of the Level I Balustrade Installation Course. The initial class size will be limited in size to assure quality. Students must be sponsored by an SMA member. A student application form will be available soon and will be emailed to all SMA contacts within approximately two weeks. Any interested candidates and their sponsors must submit the application form to be considered for acceptance. The education committee will review and choose the students for the initial Class to be held in late August.

Thanks to all who played a role in making the 30th anniversary conference of the SMA in Santa Fe a huge success. We incorporated a greatly enriched education program and schedule of alternate activities. Attendance was up 62% and our number of exhibits more than doubled.
In the days ahead we will start planning for 2019 at the Lido Key Beach Resort in Sarasota, FL April 24-27. The valued comments from both those that attended the Santa Fe Conference and those that did not will help us improve our meetings and events. Please watch for a short survey landing in your email later this week.
Today the USDA Forest Products Laboratory released a Research in Progress report describing their coalition for advanced wood structures project in cooperation with the SMA and Mississippi State Uninversity.

More than 60 entries from 12 member companies will compete in 2018 marking the 10th anniversary of the contest. Each year the bar gets raised a little higher as members present their prized efforts to be judged by their peers.
The 2018 contest will feature an "Architects" choice award to be balloted by the design professionals attending the Annual Conference in Santa Fe.
