The Proposed American National Standard AWI SMA 0643 - Wood Stair, Handrail, and Guard Systems draft has been made available for public comment. The SMA Quality Standards Committee, AWI’s Standards Development Team, and the AWI Technical Committee are seeking industry feedback as we prepare for the upcoming canvass process, which will begin following the public comment period. The standard draft is available for public comment through March 16, 2020.
Commentary submitted during the public comment period for the AWI SMA 0643 - Wood Stair, Handrail, and Guard Systems draft must be submitted through the AWI SMA Public Comment Form to ensure compliance with the record-keeping requirements the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Other forms of review cannot be considered. The Public Comment Forms are solely for the purpose of providing feedback and/or commentary on the proposed standard and do not include a voting option.
At the conclusion of the public comment period, AWI and SMA will open the canvass process for the standard. In contrast to the public comment period, the canvass process gives industry leaders the opportunity to review and cast a vote on approval of the standard.

This form must be completed regardless of an individual or organization’s past participationin any canvass process. Input from members of the industry is invaluable to us. Thoughtful reviews help us ensure we are creating a document that will benefit everyone involved in the process of specifying, creating, installing, or purchasing stairs, handrails, and/or guard systems. These comments will help us to strengthen the standard and ensure the product we release is of the utmost quality. We are looking forward to completing this process and publishing an ANSI standard.
