Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors consists of nine members each elected to 3-year terms. Divided into three classes, a new class is elected each year by the members of the SMA.  One of the directors maybe an associate member.  The executive director is contracted by the board as an ex-officio (not elected) member of the board and serves without vote.  The board elects the corporate officers annually. The directors meet regularly by tele-conference and hold 1 - 3 face to face meetings each year.

Shawn Christman - President

Shawn Christman is the founder of Seattle Stair & Design, Inc. He began the company in 1978 from the trunk of his '62 Oldsmobile and sold the company in 2015. He taught his trade in the south of India and worked in France. In 2001 he developed a training partnership with the Compagnons, an elite training guild begun in France in the middle ages, and has employed ten master craftsmen from the Compagnons since 2001. His work crosses many miles from Japan to Disney World providing staircases for celebrities, fortune 500 CEO's, and landmark commercial buildings. Many of these projects have won SMA StairCraft awards for Seattle Stair & Design, a SMA member for many years. Its successor, Gauge Design continues its SMA membership as does Shawn's new firm. Shawn has chaired the SMA marketing committee and is now quite happy to have time for pro bono projects, mind bending design work, and participation in the SMA at the board level.

Delon Shetler-  Vice President - Treasurer

Delon Shetler started building stairways in a small shop in 1993 and has worked in the stair industry as a stair builder, balustrade/rail installer, independent sales rep, and designer/draftsman. He is interested in helping the SMA and the stair industry continue to grow in a way that ensures safety and comfort to the consumer while allowing stairway design to be artistic and appealing. Delon was elected to his first term the board in 2015 and is co-owner of Heartland Stairways in Holmesville, OH.

Bob King - Secretary

I am a stairbuilder with 30 plus years in business specializing in high end stair systems that grace some of New England's finest homes. Our shop capacities include 3 axis and 5 axis cnc machines, Staircon software and a dedicated team of craftsman. King & Company Architectural has been a member of the SMA for around 10 years. This year we had the privilege of hosting one of the SMA National Tour Workshops and attended a second in New York. This involvement has opened my eyes to how much is to be gained by being an active member of the SMA and network with its members.. Having been approached to be on the board has lead me to want to be a bigger part of this organization.

Andy Chatman

Andy is proud of his 23-year tenure with ECMD, Crown Heritage, where he has served in many functions including Customer Service, Purchasing, and Sales Management resulting in a passion for selling stair parts and educating the industry.

He has been pleased to serve on the SMA Education Committee helping to develop curriculum for the SMA Architectural Education Program and is an SMA Architectural Education Presenter.

Andy looks forward to making a bigger impact serving on the SMA board.  He is excited about the momentum of the SMA and wants to do his part in maintaining that momentum.

Ed Trimner

For the past 25 years Ed has been building and installing staircases in SW Florida.  As a member of the SMA for many years and he has served on the Board of Directors in the past. While participating on the Quality Standards, and Code committees, he has gained a deep appreciation for the professionalism of this organization and the progress made in improving the stair industry throughout the country.

Ed looks forward to participating as a director and as Chair of the Quality Standard committee.  Ed Trimner is the President of Trimcraft in Fort Meyers, FL.

Elnita Post

Elnita and her husband Gary own and operate Amber Stairs & Railings in Ontario. Upon purchasing the company they joined the SMA in 2014.  Elnita especially appreciates the willingness of SMA members to share their expertise in the industry, production ideas and innovative solutions to industry dilemmas that has been helpful in growing Amber. Elnita is honored by the nomination and looks forward to the opportunity of giving back to fellow members by serving on the board of directors.

Rusty Parks

I began as a finish carpenter in 1980 after graduating high school.  In 2005, we opened our shop and began building most of our stairs in the shop rather than on-site. We are growing despite a tough market, thanks to our CNC capabilities and our expanded knowledge through the SMA. Hopefully, I can encourage others to be part of the SMA and the things that they are working toward as an organization. I believe that sharing this knowledge with others will be beneficial to the industry and would like to do what I can to help.

Chas Wiebe

Chas Wiebe along with his lovely wife Robin are proud owners of Builders Stair Supply, Inc., a Midwest company whose main emphasis is on sales and distribution of quality stair components. They are also stair builders and stair designers. Chas has been a proud member of the SMA since the early 1990's and has previously served as a board member several times.  He has been active in membership drives, regional workshops, has served on the code committee and collaborates on the Visual Interpretation of The IRC Stair Building code.  He helped with the SMA funded study which tested the handrail shape preferences of persons with different degrees of disability, and has been the emcee in the annual SMA auction since its inception.  He looks forward to continue working with SMA members to advance our unique trade.

Micah Jerome

Micah started in the stair industry in 2001 when he was hired in at Crown Stair. From shop production to administration, being involved in all parts of Crown Stair has given him good insight into growing a stair shop from the ground level up, as well as many of the ins and outs of growing a small business. As Crown Stair has grown, involvement in the SMA has proven to be invaluable in the improvements of process, production and overall stair and business knowledge. Micah hopes to be able to continue to share information, techniques and general knowledge with others through the SMA.
