Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors consists of nine members each elected to 3-year terms. Divided into three classes, a new class is elected each year by the members of the SMA.  One of the directors maybe an associate member.  The executive director is contracted by the board as an ex-officio (not elected) member of the board and serves without vote.  The board elects the corporate officers annually. The directors meet regularly by tele-conference and hold 1 - 3 face to face meetings each year.

Delon Shetler-  President

Delon started building stairways in a small shop in 1993 and has worked in the stair industry as a stair builder, balustrade/rail installer, independent sales rep, and designer/draftsman. He is interested in helping the SMA and the stair industry continue to grow in a way that ensures safety and comfort to the consumer while allowing stairway design to be artistic and appealing. Delon was elected to his first term on the board in 2015 and is co-owner of Heartland Stairways in Holmesville, OH.

Micah Jerome - Vice President

Micah started in the stair industry in 2001 when he was hired in at Crown Stair. From shop production to administration, being involved in all parts of Crown Stair has given him good insight into growing a stair shop from the ground level up, as well as many of the ins and outs of growing a small business. As Crown Stair has grown, involvement in the SMA has proven to be invaluable in the improvements of process, production and overall stair and business knowledge. Micah hopes to be able to continue to share information, techniques and general knowledge with others through the SMA.

Andy Chatman - Treasurer

Andy has been employed by ECMD/Crown Heritage since April of 1995, where he has served in many functions including Customer Service, Purchasing, and Sales Management resulting in a passion for stairs and educating the industry. He wants to help the SMA continue to develop their Education curriculum as well as promote the SMA to other organizations throughout the country. From Andy’s first involvement with the SMA, he has had the desire to get more involved with such an amazing group of wonderful and talented people.

Bob King - Secretary

Bob is a stairbuilder with 30 plus years in business specializing in high end stair systems that grace some of New England’s finest homes. His shop capacities include 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines, Staircon software and a dedicated team of craftsman. King & Company has been a member of the SMA for around 11 years. In 2018, they had the privilege of hosting one of the SMA National Tour Workshops and attended a second in New York. This involvement has opened Bob’s eyes to how much is to be gained by being an active member of the SMA and network with its members. Bob enjoys serving on the board and being a bigger part of this organization.

Shawn Christman - Membership-Marketing Committee Chair

Shawn Christman is president of Coriolis Design, Inc. and has been involved in the world of stairs since 1973. He has participated in projects throughout the US, Hawaii and the Pacific rim. As CEO of a firm focused on stair design and engineering, he routinely brings the tools of the SMA to bear on residential and commercial stair designs in need of specialized support.

Shawn believes the SMA should seek out and deepen our ties with the AIA and the wider design community. He has his Architectural Educator Credentials from the AIA, and speaks at architectural events and firms on behalf of the SMA and his own design practice.

Chas Weibe - Director

Chas Wiebe along with his lovely wife Robin are proud owners of Builders Stair Supply, Inc., a Midwest company whose main emphasis is on sales and distribution of quality stair components. They are also stair builders and stair designers. Chas has been a proud member of the SMA since the early 1990’s and has previously served as a board member several times. He has been active in membership drives, regional workshops, has served on the code committee and collaborates on the Visual Interpretation of The IRC Stair Building code. He helped with the SMA funded study which tested the handrail shape preferences of persons with different degrees of disability and has been the emcee in the annual SMA auction since its inception. He looks forward to continuing working with SMA members to advance our unique trade.

Rusty Parks - Education Committee Co-Chair

Rusty began his career 39 years ago, out of high school. As owner of Parks And Sons Inc., his knowledge and expertise in the stair industry has broadened over the years. Rusty's involvement as Co-chair of the SMA Educational Committee has deepened this knowledge. Parks And Sons Inc. is a small successful company that focuses on high end projects and unique design elements. Rusty looks forward to expanding his stair building and design skills in the future.

Jonathan Webster - Director

Jonathan was born in a small farming town in Canada and moved to Las Vegas when he was 9 years old. His father started building stairs and rails shortly after moving to Las Vegas which meant he spent his weekends and evenings growing up working on stairs. In 2005, at the age of 22 and 23 Jonathan and his brother started JD Stairs. They now have 5 members of the Webster family working at the company and approximately 78 people total on their team. They are in their 14th year. Although they grew up in the carpentry world, shortly after starting the company they saw a great need to be able to do woodwork and metal work combined. They bought a welder and started selling metal stair rails in addition to their wood ones. Most of their rails now include some component from both worlds along with a floating steel stairway.  The SMA has been a great source of wisdom and guidance for JD Stairs.  Jonathan has  always looked up to the members who dedicate their time to make the SMA a positive experience for all and he appreciates the opportunity to help other SMA members.
